Scientific collaborator / Scientific assistant

Your mission :
We are looking for a Scientific Collaborator/Assistant in Sustainability Sciences interested in applied research and awareness-raising projects with an orientation towards public policy and the anticipation of future challenges and solutions. The successful candidate will conduct applied research in the context of partnerships with Swiss and international partners and the academic community of HEC Lausanne, IMD, and EPFL. The position offers interactions and discussions with leading scientists in Economics, Business, and Natural Sciences/Engineering, as well as with private and public sector decision-makers and the public. Insights produced in the context of the research will be published in policy reports, media outlets, as well as in peer-reviewed journals.

Main duties include :
Your responsibilities will primarily consist in conducting research on the environmental and socio-economic impacts of moving towards a more circular economy. You will work within a team that will design an accessible, user-friendly, dynamic, and cross-sectoral model to simulate the benefits and tradeoffs of circular economy policies including their costs, impacts on greenhouse gas emissions and resources consumption (e.g., materials and minerals). You will identify the challenges for citizens, businesses, and economies at large, and propose solutions addressing these challenges. You will devise policy recommendations and communicate your findings in reports and presentations. Moreover, you can be involved in conducting original academic research into the circular economy, and in applying insights to create solutions for private businesses and public entities (for example, developing new metrics for measuring circularity). You might also be participating in projects on other topics, e.g., the measurement of environmental and social externalities, the valuation of biodiversity, and the solutions to promote responsible behaviors.

Your profile :
The ideal candidate is motivated and interested in working on a wide variety of topics that are important for shaping a more resilient, sustainable, and inclusive society. We will consider applicants with a PhD or a master’s degree with solid performance in fields such as sustainability sciences, environmental/materials sciences and engineering, environmental and resource economics. Ideally, you have a strong background in programming (Python), system dynamics, and material flow analysis. Knowledge in life cycle assessment is an asset.
Proficiency in English is required, and good knowledge of French and/or German is an asset. You are passionate about communicating your findings and you have good writing and communication skills, proven by previous academic or policy writings. You have the capacity to work autonomously within a dynamic team.
